Comic Relief

Comic Relief was launched from a refugee camp in Sudan on Christmas Day in 1985, live on BBC One. At that time, a devastating famine was crippling Ethiopia and something had to be done. That something was Comic Relief.

The idea was simple – Comic Relief would get a whole bunch of much-loved British comedians to make the public laugh while they raised money to help people in desperate need.

As well as doing something about the very real and direct emergency in Ethiopia, Comic Relief was determined to help tackle the broader needs of poor and disadvantaged people in Africa and at home in the UK.

We are now a major charity based in the UK which strives to create a just world free from poverty – and we work 365 days a year to help that vision become a reality.

Our mission is to drive positive change through the power of entertainment.
Since we first set up shop 25 years ago, we’ve been doing three main things…

  • We raise millions of pounds through two big fundraising campaigns – Red Nose Day and Sport Relief.
  • We spend that money in the best possible way to tackle the root causes of poverty and social injustice.
  • We use the power of our brand to raise awareness of the issues that we care most about.

Over the years we’ve inspired a lot of people who don’t normally ‘do’ charity to, well, do charity. The support we’ve had from so many friends has always blown us away – and still does today.

We’ve so far raised over £750m and helped to change millions of lives as a result.

Comic Relief cash has been at work in over 76 countries around the world since it began in 1985

Comic Relief supports work in the UK as well as overseas and has funded 12,597 projects in the UK to date.

Contrary to popular belief, we work all year round, fighting poverty and social injustice in the UK and across the world.
